Have you ever been in the situation where you are admiring a beautiful view and you want to take a picture, only you know that you won’t be able to do it justice? Capturing nature isn’t ever as easy as point-and-shoot if you really want the photograph to portray the emotion that you felt when you looked at something and wanted to remember it forever. Here are a few tips for how you can combine your love of nature and your inner photographer and make a fleeting moment last a lifetime.
Buy a Camera
Starting out with the right equipment is essential. There are plenty of cameras on the market so you should be able to easily find one that suits you. Canon cameras are really good and maintain high quality no matter how much they cost. Of course, expensive cameras generally have more features and take better quality photographs, but you can still get an inexpensive one that will have all the features you need as a beginner. Also invest in a tripod as this will give you a huge advantage while taking certain types of shots.
Capturing the Small Things
Sometimes it’s the small things that count. If you are trying to get a close-up shot of a small bug or a cluster of beautiful flowers, you will want to do what is called a macro shot. Most digital cameras have a function called macro that will automatically adjust the settings to allow for a photo of something up-close. If you want to manually adjust for this shot, then you can narrow the cameras depth of field. If you are going to be taking these types of photos often, you may want to invest in a macro lens that can fit onto your existing lens and will help to magnify things even more.
Capturing the Big Things
Generally with a broad scale nature shot such as a landscape, you will want to enlarge your depth of field so that more objects in the photograph become in focus. For a wide shot, you may also want to try increasing your ISO so that your camera can receive more light for the photo. Make the photo more interesting by either having something focused in the foreground, or allow more sky to be in the picture if it is a beautiful sunset you are trying to capture.
Capturing Moving Things
If you are lucky enough to come across a wild animal while you are out taking pictures, then you will want to be able to capture its image when it is on the move without getting the blurred effect. First you will want to increase your shutter speed (around 1/1000 of a second) so that the picture is taken quickly and the object is comes out clear. With this method, the camera might not have enough time to gather the amount of light necessary for exposure, so you may also want to increase your cameras ISO in this situation.
Taking pictures can be a really fun past time especially when you have an idea of what you are doing. These tips will help get you started, but it’s highly recommended that you attend some sort of photography course to really learn the ins and outs of your camera.
