Movies Now

Image via Wikipedia

Some people think that movies are just a big waster of time. Others think that movies are just for entertainment purposes. Although movies are very entertaining and can be for pure enjoyment, I think that there are many different things that you can learn from movies. There are so many different genres of movies and they all seem to have some sort of formula. I think that as college students, you can actually apply a lot of the formula that goes into a movie, to your own lives. Here are some things that I have learned from certain genres.

Romantic Comedies

To many they seem like mindless nonsense. To me, they are overflowing with relationship advice. If you are dating someone in college right now, you could really use some of the advice on these classic chick flicks. Take the movie, “How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days,” for example. The two main characters really like each other but there is a bet that is forcing the two to not be themselves. There is a very valuable lesson to be learned from this. When dating people in college, do not try and be someone you are not. Be yourself. If someone does not like you for who you are, you have no business being with him or her anyway.

Action

Action movies always follow a similar pattern. There is a tricky situation or some sort of mission that needs to be accomplished. There are obstacles in the way and the hero of the story usually faces challenges. With the help of friends and other people, the hero accomplishes the mission he sets out to do. Think of this as an analogy of your college career. You are going to have challenges, and some may even seem impossible. You have to remember that there are plenty of people that are here to help you along your way. If you are struggling through school or having trouble with friends, you can get help from a TA or your professor. I’m sure your roommates will also be willing to help you with whatever you need.

Documentary

Documentaries are some of the most important sources of information out there. Documentaries are created to send some sort of message to an audience. The filmmakers generally try to present the information in an artsy and creative way so that the film is not just a bunch of facts. There are tons of different topics that documentaries cover. I just watched one about a photographer who tracks down a young girl and her family who loves his pictures. There are so many documentaries out there and you can easily find one that fits an interest of yours.

History or War

These are also really great when you need to learn about the history of the earth. All of the war movies or movies about the 1920’s or Ancient Greece are not only very entertaining, but they are also very factual. Although these movies often have romantic tales in them, or stretched truths, there is still a lot you can learn from them. One of my favorite movies is Pearl Harbor. This movie is a story about a love triangle that seems impossible to figure out. It is a dramatic movie and it all takes place in the middle of World War II. I learned so much more about that time period than I ever knew before. And I was still entertained the whole time.

Tips on Hiring a Band

February 29th, 2012

When you hire a music band for an event, there are several aspects that you should keep in mind. Here are a few tips that will help you when you hire a music band:

Inform the band about song preferences

If you are particular about the songs that are played at the event, inform the band about it. Most bands are likely to have a selection of songs that they perform for a particular type of event. When you give them your song list, they will be able to incorporate it into their selection of songs for the event. Some may be unwilling to play specific songs. In that case, you can look for another band. Bands generally charge a fee in addition to the standard cost if they play songs requested by clients.

Sign a contract with the band

Once you decide on the band that will perform at the event, you should draw up a contract and sign on it. Most well-established bands for hire will have prepared contracts. Ensure that all the aspects related to hiring the services of the band are mentioned in the contract.

Some of the aspects that the document should cover are location, date and time of performance, the number of musicians who will perform, the standard fee and additional charges (if any) and the list of songs. The contract should ideally also include details on whether someone from the event or the band will operate the equipment and when their setup is expected.

Make all enquiries with the band before you sign the contract. For instance, if you want to negotiate the price of hiring the band, discuss this with them first. If they agree, the contract you sign will be for that amount.

Decide band’s dress code based on event theme

It is best to inform the band about the dress code they should follow for the event. The dress code will be especially important if it is a formal event. Let the band know the dress code in advance. This will give them the time they require for arranging for the clothes.

When you opt for one of the bands for hire, discuss whether they will be willing to arrange for a backup group or performers in case they are unable to play on the day of the event. This will help ensure that you do not have to go through the hassle of looking for a replacement in this case.

Chief Bride-slave

February 28th, 2012
English: Bridesmaids

Image via Wikipedia

Finally it arrives: the phone call that you’ve been waiting for ever since your best friend showed you her engagement ring. You pick up phone and your breath catches in your throat. It’s going to be you! You are going to be the chief bridesmaid. A shiver runs down your spine as you hang up the phone; you can’t shake the feeling that you heard your friend utter ‘bride-slave’ and not bridesmaid. It must just be the phone service—right?

Wrong. There is no amount of pride or honor that will alleviate the work load the chief bridesmaid must endure through months of bridal preparations. If you are unlucky enough to have been awarded this esteemed position, it’s too late now; you’re in this as deep as it gets.  The chief bridesmaid is almost as important as the wedding planner, and if there isn’t one of them, you’ve now assumed that title, too.

Bearing the Brunt

While the bride will be busy picking out her cake, her flowers, and her dress, you will be the unfortunate soul who has to make sure deadlines are adhered to, color schemes are followed, and tailoring nightmares are remedied before the big day. The bride does not want to be concerned with the stressors of becoming married; the bride wants to revel in the fun of trying on dress after dress and spending lots of money on things that will only be used once (hopefully). This bride-detachment phenomenon has no name, but it is a monster that can devour a chief bridesmaid if she is not careful. Accepting the position—which really isn’t a choice—means enduring the brunt of the bride’s wrath when things don’t go as planned. Not only will you need to keep your cool as your supposed friend is rattling off insults through redirected aggression, you will need to find words of wisdom to turn her from her tirade. And this is all before the day even arrives.

The Big Day

On the day your friend steps up to pledge her life to another, you will barely have time to stand at the podium with her. Hours before the ceremony begins, you will be directing florists, arranging seating, setting out favors, verifying arrangements, ensuring the cake is not a mess, and making sure your fellow bridesmaids are awake and heading to the gathering point. Anyone who has an issue will be coming to you for your almighty decision, and you had better hope that it is a decision the bride would appreciate.

Don’t assume anything

One of the worst things a chief bridesmaid can do is assume the bride will want something prepared in a certain fashion. You are the chief slave because you know what the bride’s tastes are. If they are different from your own preferences, do not stray from the path! Never forget that any transgressions on the bride’s day, no matter how miniscule, will be a direct reflection of your efforts or lack thereof. This will be exactly the same when it comes to the Hen party, make every effort to do exactly what the bride wants and make it a night she will never forget, for all the right reasons.

Wanted:Chief Brides-slave

There is no doubt that the chief bride-slave is indeed an unwanted and unappreciated position. When everything is on the line, it is the Maid of Honor that stands with the bride, and you are just another lackey in ranks. Get ready to brave the hen party planning, make every dress fitting, offer an abundance of complimentary advice, and be responsible if anything goes wrong. If you’re looking for abuse and like to feel inconsequential, then the chief bride-slave position is just for you!

Energy Boosting Tips for Corporate Travellers

February 25th, 2012
English: MM62209 is an Italian Air Force Airbu...

Image via Wikipedia

Travelling across different time zones and attending meetings and conferences all day can get exhausting and draining, even for the most fit business person. There are also the evening functions to think about. The fast pace can soon wreak havoc on your health and take a toll on your performance. The best way to combat fatigue is all in your downtime and healthy eating. Here are five energising boosting tips to survive the most hectic itinerary.

Rest

Rest is undoubtedly the secret to excellent health and wellbeing and is the ultimate way to relieve stress, relax and unwind. Everybody, including workaholics, must commit to getting as much sleep as possible. Serviced apartments in Brisbane and other Aussie accommodation offer different bedding options to suit every guest.

Eight hours of sleep is sufficient to gain increased concentration, better problem solving skills, improved efficiency and more energy overall to face any number of business trip events. You’ll soon reap the benefits of an increased blood flow to the muscles, decreased muscle tension and low blood pressure.

Limit Caffeine and Alcohol

Corporate travellers should avoid high levels of caffeine whenever possible as too much of it can cause emotional fatigue and dehydration due to its diuretic properties. Although alcohol can sometimes be offered during corporate dinners, it should be strictly limited. Getting drunk or even a little tipsy is obviously not a good look professionally. Opt for water and fresh juices instead for energy and staying focused.

Try to also avoid high salt intake to reduce the bloat and looking puffy. Instead, try to eat more fibre rich foods to keep your strength up.

Dress Comfortably & Professionally

Corporate travellers should always wear comfortable clothes and shoes. When you feel good, you’ll look and feel confident and energised for the work and travelling ahead. Ensure you have well fitted suits and shoes. You should also dress for the weather.

It’s worthwhile to shop around for the best clothes and consider buying tailor made attire you can invest in. For shoes, shock absorbent soles always provide the best comfort for shoes.

Good Preparation

Being well prepared before the trip will reduce stress and anxiety and increase energy levels. This includes ensuring you have all of your work materials, itinerary and passport with you in your carry-on luggage. Also, understanding what you’ll be doing and where you’ll be going will prepare you well for the trip ahead. This will keep you alert and mentally energised, which will help your business trip be enjoyable and run as smoothly as possible.

Apartments in Brisbane and elsewhere in Australia provide facilities for corporate activities like meeting rooms and a working desk with a direct-dial telephone. This helps in preparing business people for corporate events.

Energy Bars

Although energy bars can contain high levels of carbohydrates, they are good for increasing energy levels during the day and helps improve endurance. They’re also a good nutritional alternative to junk food. However, it’s important to check the labels because some might contain high levels of sugar or little nutritional benefits.

Renting a Snowmobile a few helpful tips

February 25th, 2012
ASPEN, CO - JANUARY 30: Tucker Hibbert of Pel...

Image by Getty Images via @daylife

Many of us have had the pleasure of taking a snowy vacation as well as the memories of our first time on a pair of ski’s or a snowboard.  You may have fond memories of gathering round the fireplace with a warm drink while regaling the events of the day. Last year I had the privilege of riding my very first snowmobile and all that I can say is – I have been hooked ever since.

Unfortunately, in these tough economic times I cannot afford to purchase a snowmobile of my own and have to rely on renting one. I am not put off by this, on the contrary I see it as me doing my part for the small business man by showing my support.  There are, however, a few things that you will have to look out for or at least take note of when you are hiring a snowmobile.

Laws

Each state’s laws differ with regards to whether a snowmobile needs to be licensed or not. The same can be said for whether you should have a licence or special permit in order to operate a snowmobile. Some states even require that you do a safety course before you are allowed to hire one.

Which size?

Snowmobiles come in various shapes and sizes, the sizes are indicative of the purpose for which the snowmobile is intended to be used.

Beginner (Trail Models)

These snowmobiles are relatively light and their engine power bands are usually in the region of 60/70 horsepower. The lightweight design and power makes this snowmobile ideal for beginners as these characteristics enable it to handle very well.

Touring

Snowmobile seating arrangements can accommodate two riders, with the passenger having a backrest to ensure comfort on longer rides. These models are the biggest of the range and they are equipped with a larger windscreen, side mirrors, reverse gear as well as an electrical start function.

Performance

As the name would indicate these machines are set up with performance in mind. These machines usually have engines that kick out a mind blowing (or in this case snow blowing) 85 horses and more. Due to the bigger engines these machines are usually heavier as well. These snowmobiles are also equipped with a reverse gear and electrical start function.

Mountain

Due to the high elevations that these specific snowmobiles are operated at, you will find that they have engines that produce a large amount of horsepower. At high elevations you would generally experience a loss in horsepower. These machines are usually narrower as well as longer to facilitate easier side hilling.

The best advice that anyone should take note of before hiring a snowmobile is to take their riding skill and experience into account and to not choose a machine that would be too powerful for them to handle safely.

Be sure to advise your loved ones or friends of your intended route of travel as well as your estimated return time. Try to avoid riding over frozen rivers or lakes as that could really land you in the drink if you do not know what you are doing.

So you want to fly like Icarus

February 25th, 2012
Hang glider under tow. Philadelphia, USA. 1920s.

Image via Wikipedia

Human beings rose to the top of the food chain due to our ability to strategise and reason. Our opposable thumbs and ability to create and use tools have also set us apart from our closest genetic cousins, the apes. Even with all of the advantages that our advanced brains have afforded us, there are a still a few things that we haven’t been able to manage yet.

Since the beginning of time human beings have been fascinated with flight. Many have tried to simulate the process and many have failed. In Greek mythology Icarus was the son of Daedalus, a renowned craftsman who constructed wings for both himself and his son in order to escape captivity. The wings that Daedalus created are said to have been made up of feathers and wax. Icarus, however, ignored the warnings of his father and flew too close to the sun, which in turn melted the wax and led to Icarus falling to his death.

These days we know that simply strapping feathers to our arms won’t allow us to achieve flight, however, with the invention of the hang glider we can experience what it could be like if humans had the ability to fly.

Hang gliding is fast becoming the sport of choice amongst those looking to experience the thrill of free flight. There are, however, a few things that you have to prepare yourself for.

Fear of heights

If you have even the slightest fear of heights then this sport is definitely not for you. On any day the updrafts could raise you to well above 6.000 feet. At this height people on the ground are reduced to moving dots and the curvature of the earth on the horizon is visible.

Physicality

You need not be overtly physically strong in order to enjoy this sport but a certain level of strength is needed. This is particularly evident during takeoff and landing. During takeoff you will be required to launch both yourself and your rig off a mountain or hill, the rig on average weighs in at about 70lbs. A certain degree of upper body strength is also required on long flights and when you experience turbulence.

Equipment

Hang gliders are made up of steel wires, sail, aluminium tubing and a kingpost. These simple components, which are so fragile on the ground, provide you with a comfortable and sturdy flight. As with most sports equipment, the hang glider comes in various wing shapes and sizes.

Pure freedom

Nothing to date can compare to the feeling of unbridled freedom that you will experience once you are soaring at 6.000 feet. The pure joy of surveying the lay of the land from a true bird’s eye view, the feel of the crisp air on your face (yes it does get cold up there).

Once you have experienced the freedom you wouldn’t want to do anything else.

Why opt for church management software

February 25th, 2012

Churches are like any other organization and like any organization they need to be managed. A church involves many variables and keeping track of everything can be hard, the best nowadays to manage a church is to get management software.

There are management programs in the market but few are specifically directed to manage churches. This used to be a problem because people wanted to manage their church with efficiency but they couldn’t because those managing programs were directed to companies.

Fortunately some people saw this problem that people were having when managing churches and decided to make proper software for a church. This management software is made especially for churches and covers all the needs churches have when it comes to management. Such software can be found at church software for example.

Many churches grow so much that involve hundreds of persons and many suppliers, without proper management software is almost impossible to keep track of everything and that can lead to errors or mistakes.

Nowadays every organization uses management software because it just makes people’s lives easier. Modern times demand computers almost for everything and this rule is no different for churches.

Another argument is that churches as time goes along tend to grow and use more services which mean that is going to be even harder to account for everything in the future unless they have management software specifically made for their purpose.

Loans with bad credit

February 24th, 2012
Money

Money (Photo credit: 401K)

There are many people in a rough situation right now, this economic crisis has led many people into monetary problems that need a quick injection of money right now.

If you need money right now and if you have a bad credit history I know a place that can help you. Many people are stuck right now but with a bit of money can get their life on track and that’s why I’m doing this post, to help you get your life on track.

If you are in a bad credit situation and if you want a quick loan then all you have to do is check personal loans for bad credit.

Many times a loan can really save lives, accidents happen throughout life and sometimes we need money to get us out of those though situations. An good example can be a car breakdown, imagine that you need your car to get to work and that it is the only way to get to work, the car breaks down and you’re without money, that means a pretty big chance of losing your job and only a loan to pay for the repair of your car will help you. Thankfully there are some companies that still help people and you should use them if you don’t want to face even more terrible consequences.

Like this example there are many other examples and the important is that you get that crucial amount of money when it matters the most. I’m not saying to bury yourself in debt but to use it wisely, when you do need it and when it can change things for the better.

I just hope that you sort out your situation with the help provided in this post. Make sure you only ask for the money you really need.

Be dry and warm this winter

February 24th, 2012
English: A tree branch completely en-globed in...

Image via Wikipedia

The winter is here and with the winter we need to take some precautions. For the winter we need at least a good winter jacket with hood, warm trousers, and waterproof boots.

We’re half way through the winter but sometimes we have clothes left from the last year that don’t last another winter. Sometimes we also have not so good winter clothes and we want to improve our wardrobe. Anyway is always good to have a good source of winter clothes.

Nowadays I buy everything in the internet because it’s more practical. I even buy clothes because once you know your clothes sizes you just have to order the size you wear.

For me it’s very important to get quality clothes for winter because I hate to be cold, it’s important to opt for brands like canada goose if you hate the cold as much as I do.

Going through winter with bad clothes is pretty nasty because you end up getting wet and cold. For me being dry and warm all throughout the winter is really important and that’s why I always go for the best when it comes to winter clothing.

For me the boots are also really important, you know those days when it rains in the morning? Those days can be terrible if you end up with wet feet. A long time ago, when I didn’t pay much importance to winter clothing I had some kaki boots and they really made some of my winter days terrible and taught me a few lessons.

Trousers are also important especially when it rains a lot, I always have to pairs of waterproof trousers for those heavy rain days. Waterproof trousers can really make your life better in harsh rainy days.

With my tips you’ll feel comfortable and warm all throughout the winter.
