Some people think that movies are just a big waster of time. Others think that movies are just for entertainment purposes. Although movies are very entertaining and can be for pure enjoyment, I think that there are many different things that you can learn from movies. There are so many different genres of movies and they all seem to have some sort of formula. I think that as college students, you can actually apply a lot of the formula that goes into a movie, to your own lives. Here are some things that I have learned from certain genres.
Romantic Comedies
To many they seem like mindless nonsense. To me, they are overflowing with relationship advice. If you are dating someone in college right now, you could really use some of the advice on these classic chick flicks. Take the movie, “How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days,” for example. The two main characters really like each other but there is a bet that is forcing the two to not be themselves. There is a very valuable lesson to be learned from this. When dating people in college, do not try and be someone you are not. Be yourself. If someone does not like you for who you are, you have no business being with him or her anyway.
Action
Action movies always follow a similar pattern. There is a tricky situation or some sort of mission that needs to be accomplished. There are obstacles in the way and the hero of the story usually faces challenges. With the help of friends and other people, the hero accomplishes the mission he sets out to do. Think of this as an analogy of your college career. You are going to have challenges, and some may even seem impossible. You have to remember that there are plenty of people that are here to help you along your way. If you are struggling through school or having trouble with friends, you can get help from a TA or your professor. I’m sure your roommates will also be willing to help you with whatever you need.
Documentary
Documentaries are some of the most important sources of information out there. Documentaries are created to send some sort of message to an audience. The filmmakers generally try to present the information in an artsy and creative way so that the film is not just a bunch of facts. There are tons of different topics that documentaries cover. I just watched one about a photographer who tracks down a young girl and her family who loves his pictures. There are so many documentaries out there and you can easily find one that fits an interest of yours.
History or War
These are also really great when you need to learn about the history of the earth. All of the war movies or movies about the 1920’s or Ancient Greece are not only very entertaining, but they are also very factual. Although these movies often have romantic tales in them, or stretched truths, there is still a lot you can learn from them. One of my favorite movies is Pearl Harbor. This movie is a story about a love triangle that seems impossible to figure out. It is a dramatic movie and it all takes place in the middle of World War II. I learned so much more about that time period than I ever knew before. And I was still entertained the whole time.
